I miss having the farmers market in Kits, especially as I begin to plan meals for the holiday festivities. I just don’t make it to Nat Bailey Stadium for the weekend winter market as often as I intended. Nonetheless, I do plan to pick up some locally made gifts and tasty treats at the 16th Annual Holiday Market on Saturday, December 17 at the Croatian Cultural Center (3250 Commercial Drive) from 10am-5pm. read more »

It’s soon hearty stew and apple crisp season and every recipe tastes better with local produce. Make the most of fall’s offerings at the Kitsilano Farmer’s Market, which isn’t just a summer phenomena. The Kits Market is going strong every Sunday, 10:00 am -2:00 pm, at 10th and Larch, through October 23.
In Season Now: Apples, corn squash, beans, beets, carrots, cauliflower, hazelnuts, kohlrabi, leeks, turnips, zucchini, apricots and plums . If you’re looking for a product that isn’t on the list, conduct a detailed search here.

I recently met Emi Do and Mark Seiling (pictured right), the two youthful urban farmers behind Yummy Yards, at a Kits House potluck dinner about food security. They had dirt under their fingernails and a lot of pluck when it came to discussing local food. It turns out they’ve been growing veg and leafy greens out of eight neighbourhood yards located mostly in Dunbar/Southlands.
They just emailed me to let me know that Yummy Yards has an abundance of crops that they’d like to share, but it’s challenging to get the word out. Yummy Yards is all about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)–a global movement that connects consumers with food producers. I thought I’d facilitate some connecting.

Motivated by sustained sunshine, I dropped by the Kits Farmers Market, open Sundays from 10am-2pm, to take care of the weekly grocery shopping. I wasn’t the only one. The lot was buzzing and the bicycle valet parking was almost full. It’s my first experience with bicycle valet, and although I chuckled when I first heard about it, it’s a luxury I could get used to.
Food carts including Icy Fresh Pops, Roaming Dragon and the Bean Buggy had constant lines. The surrounding grassy areas were speckled with picnicking/napping locals. I didn’t lunch, but shopped for biodynamic cherries and organic zucchini, which were about the length of a little league bat.
The raspberries and huckleberries looked fantastic. The kale was a cheerful rainbow.

Add a fiddle to the mix and it surely beats a trip to Costco.
