Head out to the Winter Wander at Vanier Park Dec. 3

I don’t know about you, but I need extra motivation to get out in winter. Here’s some real incentive. Saturday, Dec. 3, the six cultural institutions that call Vanier Park (Kitsilano’s biggest park) home will celebrate the public space with a Winter Wander event.

Vanier Park is home to the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Vancouver, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, Bard on the Beach, Vancouver Academy of Music, and the City of Vancouver Archives – a wide range of cultural experiences within easy walking distance. Perks include reduced rates of $5 for adult entry to all museums, free entry for kids, a glut of food trucks and performances by the talent at Vancouver Academy of Music. You’ll also have the opportunity to win memberships to the three participating museums.

NEW FILMS

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2-in 3D, Daily, 1:15, 4:00, 6:50, 9:40, Fifth Avenue Cinemas.

Ecstatic muggles began lining up early Thursday evening for the midnight premier of this long-awaited film. It’s the end of the ten-year Harry Potter era, which is significant for Potter haters and lovers alike. With the midnight screening alone, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 set a box office record, grossing $43.5 M.

Horrible Bosses, Daily, 4:00, 7:00, 9:10, The Ridge Theatre.

For Nick (Jason Bateman), Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) and Dale (Charlie Day), the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses (Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Aniston) into dust. Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few-too-many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con (Jamie Foxx), the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers.

Volleyball BC 2011 Vancouver OPEN, Friday, July 15-Sunday, July 17, Kitsilano Beach.
Some of the best national and international beach volleyball players will be hitting it up for the annual Vancouver Open. The qualifying tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and main-draw play runs Saturday and Sunday starting at 9 a.m. There’s also a licensed beer garden
serving Granville Island craft beer and Bassano Hard Soda.

Vancouver Folk Music Festival, July 15-Sunday, July 17, Jericho Beach, ticketed.
The Van Folk Music Festival is a summer institution, drawing artists from around the world for three days of concerts and workshops. Local artists include Kathryn Calder (The New Pornographers) and the bluesy C.R. Avery. Visiting notables include Rosanne Cash, the daughter of legendary Johnny and a talented singer/songwriter in her own right, plus Nashville-native Gillian Welch.

Tanning is Out, Sunday, July 17th, 12:00pm – 2:00pm, Kits beach, near the Boathouse restaurant, free.
The Canadian Cancer Society is launching their Tanning is Out campaign, with Tanning is Out Ambassadors the Burnadettes. A tent will be set up with information and the Society will offer shady lounging under luxurious, resort-style beach umbrellas.

It’s all happening at the market. Grab a tasty meal at a food cart, grocery shop for produce, browse handicrafts and chat with your neighbours. Tis the season for rhubarb, especially. I’m making pie.

Tour Delamont: Kitsilano’s Oldest City Block of Houses, Sunday, July 17, 10am to 12pm, Heritage Vancouver Members $10; Non-members $15.

Join local historian Bruce MacDonald for a fascinating exploration of Delamont Park. Delamont/Kitsilano officially began in 1905, the year the neighbourhood was named, streetcar service was extended to Kitsilano Beach and development started in earnest. Amazingly amongst the blocks and blocks of apartment buildings in east Kitsilano is a small group of houses surviving from those earliest years and before

Warning: Summer means fiesta o’clock throughout the whole city. Although we’re hyper-local, we just wouldn’t be Vancouverites if we didn’t mention these other two awesome fests taking place outside of Kits this weekend. Read on for a quick peek at city-wide events—your bonus special— followed by  neighbourhood gossip/happenings.

TWO GOOD REASONS TO LEAVE THE HOOD

Summer Live, a.k.a. Vancouver’s Birthday Bash, Friday, July 8 to Sunday, July 10, free.
Van is celebrating its 125th birthday this year and everyone’s invited to the party at Summer Live, a free outdoor festival from July 8 to 10 at Brockton Point in Stanley Park. Head out for performances by the likes of Neko Case, The New Pornographers, Dan Mangan and more. There’s also a family stage, drop-in sports matches, beer and wine gardens, global cuisine and even a Bollywood-style shin dig.

Did you know that 2011 has been officially designated the “Year of India in Canada”? We didn’t either. But now you do so perhaps check out the the first-ever Indian Summer Festival, July 7 to 17. This fest welcomes top Indian talent from the genres of music, theatre, lit, film, yoga and cuisine. All 20 events and workshops, take place at SFU Woodward’s (149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver). Mountain Equipment Co-op Paddlefest is an urban celebration of kayaking, canoeing, and the ocean environment in British Columbia. The festival will feature learning opportunities on the water and on the land. Paddlers of all skill levels are welcome. There will be FREE on water courses like intro to kayaking, forward strokes, intro to rolling, basic rescue, towing, paddling fitness and kids kayaking.

Ewan McGregor teams up with Christopher Plummer and Mélanie Laurent in this off beat rom com. McGregor plays a timid guy with a crush on the bold, irreverent Laurent. Unable to get his game going, he draws on memories of his deceased father (Plummer), who came out of the closet at age 75, using his bravery for inspiration.

Greek Day, Sunday, June 26, 11am – 9am, free.
Be Greek for a day at the annual family-oriented street festival. Broadway will be closed to car traffic from McDonald to Blenheim to make room for a world of fabulous Greek food, kiosks and entertainment. Learn to roll dolmades in the Boutari Wines Culinary Tent. See Greek gods mingle with mortals. Settle down in the mythological story telling tent. Eat tons of souvlaki, spanikopita and honeyed loukoumades. Then holler “Opa!”

Critical Mass Vancouver, Every last Friday of the month, Meet at 5:30, Ride at 6:00 pm, free.
Cyclists in Kits can meet with cyclists Van-wide at the Vancouver Art Gallery to ride in a “Critical Mass.” Whether you’re traffic shy, or an avid cyclist, this is an effective way to a familiarize the city with eco-friendly transport.

Semperviva Yoga‘s Trance Dance, Saturday, June 25, 8:00 pm-10:00 pm, $25.
Clara Roberts-Oss and DJ Augustus lead you in the ultimate combo of ancient activities: yoga and dance. While I don’t know the specific calorie burning impact, the class should free one’s “creative life-force.”

Hands Across The Sand, Saturday, June 25, 12:00pm – 12:30pm, free.
Hands Across The Sand will take place on Kits Beach. People will join hands to champion clean energy solutions to our energy and fuel problems. RSVP here.

Celebrations will happen in Kitsilano, Main Street, the West End and on Commercial Drive, where the festivities were first started by community volunteers in 2005. Kitsilano is doing something different for Car Free Day. Instead of closing off a major street, people throughout Kits are hosting individual block parties with their neighbours. The Van Courier says “block parties will checkerboard Kitsilano.”
