My take:
...I even had a dream where it had become [a cool, but ultimately unsustainable business that would likely close in a year or two, due to this niche being currently filled in the Kitsilano neighborhood].
But my dream will not become a reality.
Posters went up yesterday confirming rumours that the space would soon house [a profitable, popular store that will provide a lot of value for Kits residents and offer more economic stability for it's future employees.]

Really, when they took over the biz from the former kitchen store I just had to shake my head. The same not inexpensive kitchenware you can find all over the city and with Ming Wo a block away.

These guys are, I believe, from Edmonton where they have a store of the same name. I'm thinking that market research was minimal before moving in.

All the same 4th is taking a beating with more empty store fronts then I've ever seen.

Not surprising- I don't see how they could have made a dime all the time they've been in business in Kits-the other stores must have subsidised the 4th Ave location.

Just had my lights stolen a few days ago. Usually, I take them off when I leave my bike outside, but I was in a rush and this was on a busy street in daylight. What could go wrong? I thought. (Actually, I didn't think that, I just left my lights on the bike without thinking.)

Lesson learned: always remove your lights when parking your bike in public, even if for just a short time.

I don't know if the secure bike light will be worth it. I think I'd prefer to just remove the lights each time. It is not a particularly onerous thing to do (you just need to remember).

"So, what do you think about “To Catch a Bike Thief”? Is it just entertainment? Vigilantism? Or will it have an impact on bike theft in Vancouver?"
I'll have a better sense of that once I view the pilot episode. The trailer is certainly fashioned in such a way to appeal to mainstream audiences (entertainment-oriented), and that's fine.
I don't think it'll have any impact on the rate of theft attempts, but hopefully will help raise awareness for bike owners on good & easy deterrents. Ultimately, if a thief really wants your bike they'll find a way to steal it, regardless of what precautions you take. All you can do is try to make their job a little harder.

I am really happy to hear that Hunter's is returning to Kitsilano!! Also happy to hear that something will finally happen to the old KFC site - it was looking pretty crappy, and KFC always sucked anyway.

I played with Akron two seasons in HS . He was socially awkward yet very bright, not the most gifted athelete but still an amazing basketball player. His work ethic was something you just dont see, he would practice, practice , practice then practice some more. The janitors at Kits high used to hate him since he was always around shooting hoops. He was determined to make it and that attitude was present within him at 12 years old.

I often wonder what really happened to him and every few years I have a dream that he is alive and back in Vancouver. I didnt love being around him, he had an intensity that was far beyond a H.S kids maturity ; I simply couldn't relate, but he impacted me, pre and post dissapearence. It showed me what it took to be that good at something .

Whatever happened to Akron and his family, I really hope, like we all do, that they didnt suffer.
