That’s what the Vancouver Park Board is trying to decide, and an open house has been planned for Tuesday March 31st.
A recent staff report [PDF] suggests that, while 5 new skate parks have been built in the last 10 years, no “sanctioned” BMX/mountain bike facilities currently exist within Vancouver. The only known facility was a “rogue” dirt jump terrain that had been set up in a park at Oak and 37th. Concerns about mature trees led to the demolishing of the site, and there was no room for the dirt jump park in the newly developed Oak Meadows park.
Together with proponents of a BMX/mountain bike facility, the Parks Board has identified a small vacant space next to the kayak/boat storage in Vanier Park as a potential site for a dirt jump park.

The open house is scheduled for Tuesday March 31st from 5:00-8:00pm at the Vancouver Museum’s Local History Lab (1100 Chestnut Street). For more details, contact Mark Vulliamy, Manager of Research and Planning, at mark.vulliamy@vancouver.ca or 604.257.8461.

Heading south this winter? Is doing laps at the pool going to be your New Year’s resolution? Shopping for a bathing suit can be a drag, as my wife can attest. While Swimco, La Vie en Rose Aqua, and Blue Crush (all on West 4th) are beautiful stores, they tend to cater mainly to the Lululemon crowd in terms of sizing.
The answer? Check out Forbie Canada (2678 West 4th @ Stephens). They specialize in custom made swimwear, most of which can be made within an hour. While this may sound extravagant, prices are actually really competitive, and totally worth it when you can get something that fits all parts of you. And with a choice of about 30 different one and two piece suits and over 400 different fabrics, they are bound to carry your style.
The owners are really nice and know what they’re doing; they have been in business for over 30 years, and at the Kits location for over seven.

A week ago, we told you – perhaps somewhat facetiously – about how Popey’s Supplements pulled a “bait and switch” event. They announced the presence of Anderson “The Spider” Silva – according to Yahoo! Sports the current best pound-for-pound MMA fighter – but switched him at the last moment with lesser known Kenny “Ken Flo” Florian.
Well, it looks like MMA fans will get another chance, as The Spider is set to make an appearance at the Broadway store (2295 West Broadway @ Vine) on Monday, December 8, from 3-8pm.

The weekend of July 18-20th Kits Beach plays host to the 2008 Corona Extra Open beach volleyball tournament (formerly the Vancouver Molson Open). This year’s competition will include players from across North America, all competing for their chance at the $15,000 purse. The volleyball tournament boasts the largest purse in Canada. The weekend will be full of action for players and spectators alike at the undoubtedly Canada’s hottest beach, including a VIP beer garden, prize giveaways and some great beach action.
It’s a 32 Team Double Elimination Draw for the Men’s and Women’s Open Divisions and registration is open until Friday June 13th for teams applying for a Wild Card spot.

I wasn’t expecting another bicycle store to take Ride Away’s recently vacated spot on West 4th @ Burrard. Then again, this isn’t a bad location for a bicycle store. It’s across from Dizzy Cycles and close to snowboard alley, making this part of West 4th a bit of an outdoor sports shop destination.
The new store that will give it a try in this location is simply called Bicycles, and will offer a slightly different approach than more traditional bicycle stores:
My goal is to provide professional level service and custom fitted and specced performance bicycles with a focus on road, track, touring and cyclocross bicycles. Every bicycle that comes out of bicycles is uniquely built to measure for each customer. This is a bit of a unique process in this industry and it takes a little longer to do but it doesn’t cost any more to do and I feel it’s important, above all else, that a bicycle must fit if it’s going to be a good thing.
For the latest updates and custom built bicycle news, check out Bicycles’ blog.

The votes are in (all 56 of them) and Kitsilano Workout has been crowned the Best Gym in Kitsilano. Here are the results:
- Kitsilano Workout – 41.1% (23 votes)
- Kits Community Center – 25% (14 votes)
- Fitness World – 16.1% (9 votes)
- Westside Gym – 10.7% (6 votes)
- Just Ladies – 3.6% (2 votes)
- Ron Zalko – 3.6% (2 votes)
I wouldn’t necessarily trust these results though. The fitness business is ultra competitive and gym owners and employees tend to weigh in online when they shouldn’t be.

On Friday, I emerged from the (albeit fun and educational) fog of a two week full time practicum at the Kits library. I rubbed my eyes, looked up, and realized that the city was in full blown playoff fever. Truly exciting, especially since I was in Edmonton for the Flames cup run, and I was in Vancouver for Edmonton’s shot at Stanley. Finally I will get the whole experience of a city gone wild for a team I care about, even if it’s in an admittedly bandwagony sort of way. Having forsworn television upon moving to the new place, I need the scoop on the best pubs in Kits for watching the hopefully many more than 2 Canucks games to come!

Surely this relatively nice weather cannot last, and when it does get miserable again there is something cheap, fun, and active you can do indoors. No, I’m not talking about that. The Kitsilano War Memorial Community Centre, (as well as other city rinks), offers skating for different demographics (public, family, adult, senior) in several time slots throughout the week. You can rent both kinds of skates for $2.45. I usually only skate once a year and true to form, I did bail somewhat spectacularly, but only once. Next time I will hit up the Adult Skate on a Friday night to avoid the children careening wildly around the rink during the public skate on Saturday afternoons!

Starting tonight at Connaught Park, teams from the Vancouver Women’s Fastball League will be battling it out in the play-offs. These ladies are very competitive and will be giving it their all on the diamond. If you’re looking for some free action as your summer fun fund is dwindling, this is definitely the place to be. Some games will be played at Mahon Park in North Van, but the way things are looking, there will be 2 games at Connaught pretty much every night at 7 pm. Be sure to check out the website to confirm for the coming games, as the site only lists games as far ahead as tomorrow.
