Kitsilano Beach

Kitsilano dwellers will tell you how they love to watch the waters of English Bay change colour in wintertime. Despite our enthusiasm for all things Kitsilano all year round, there’s no doubt that our beachfront neighbourhood, called Vancouver’s Venice Beach, truly shines in summer.

Summer in Kitsilano brings a multitude of outdoor festivals and events. Here’s a list of the best summer events to help you plan ahead for the fun. From free street parties with live music and food trucks, to classic Shakespeare with a view of the North Shore mountains, the line-up is as stunning as Kitsilano’s scenery. Read more ›

Corduroy Restaurant Opens for Lunch and Adds a New Kids’ Play Area

CorduroyNow that the more “predictable” weather is back in Vancouver, there’s nothing quite like digging into a generously cheese-drizzled poutine with savoury Guinness jus. Add to that a pint of chocolatey Elysian Dragonstooth Stout and a snug wooden bench seat and I’d say you’ve arrived at comfort food Valhalla.

Where do you find such an agreeable place? East Vancouver? Perhaps Gastown? Surely it must be on Main Street? Well lucky for us folks on the westside, Corduroy, as this elusive little restaurant is called, is actually located within walking distance from many of our own dwellings – on Cornwall Avenue between Maple Street and Cypress Street, just a few currently-in-full-bloom blocks from Kits Beach.

With an interior reminiscent of an old-fashioned ski chalet complete with real trophy antlers and antique winter sports gear, and a rather subdued exterior, Corduroy has been a family-run spot favoured by locals who have quietly known of its existence since it opened in 2008. Chef Figg has been preparing sophisticated pub fare from the beginning. Award winning poutine, spicy lamb sausage pizza, and addictive Bourbon bbq wings just a few of the creative menu items on offer. Read more ›

West 4th Avenue BIA Celebrates the End of Construction with a Shopping Party May 25

shopping party

I had a chat with Russ Davies, CEO of the Kitsilano 4th Avenue Business Improvement Association and got the scoop on the end of construction on West 4th. They’re done early, folks. And West 4th Avenue plans to celebrate. Join the merchants at the West 4th Shopping Party May 25 from 11am to 4pm. Details below in an article I wrote about it for the Westender.

Large-scale city infrastructure projects are often associated with disruption and delays. The West 4th Avenue sewer upgrade, however, which is the biggest city infrastructure project in 2013, bucked the trend by finishing early.

In addition to sewers, West 4th’s retail and restaurant strip between Burrard and Balsam will sparkle in time for summer with repaved roads, new curbs and sidewalks, as well as wide wheelchair ramps sure to please the neighbourhood’s ample stock of parents with strollers. Read more ›

Learn How to Cultivate Kitsilano Community through Gardening at a Free Workshop May 25

VancouverSunPhoto

There are 500 Green Streets gardens allocated to volunteer gardeners and 250 still available. What are Green Street gardens? Green Streets gardens are planted by volunteers in busy areas including traffic circles and corner bulges. Why would you want one? You like gardening. You think your neighbourhood has an eyesore in need of beautification. The City pays for the initial planting.

How do you get a Green Streets location in Kitsilano? Watch for the signs – yellow is taken; green is available.

If you see a sign on a garden near you saying it’s available, don’t hesitate. Green Streets coordinator, Sara Orchard, tells me that plots in Kits get snapped up quickly. There’s only one available right now, and I won’t even tell you where because she’s had people express interest. Of course,  you can always offer to help a volunteer gardener – that’s how I met Kim Peterson, a neighbour only 3 blocks away.

New Granola Bars at Terra Breads + Recipe to Make Your Own

Embedded image permalink

I have found myself at Terra Breads three times this week to pick up one of their new granola bars. At $2 and 200 calories, they are the perfect size for a little afternoon snack. Terra recently included the granola bars in their product line up – they are a natural addition given their wildly successful granola. The bars really are delicious. The have a great consistency and are not too sweet. Nonetheless, given my recent kick on them, I decided to make my own.

Easy Homemade Granola Bars
(recipe from Carpeseason.com; originally from Smitten Kitchen )

This easy granola bar recipe makes perfect salty-sweet chewy granola bars that are not too sweet. You can use any combination of dried fruit or nuts that you like. They come together quickly and can even be frozen.  Makes an 8X8 pan.

Looking For the Perfect Park in Kits? There’s an App for That

Fun on the swings at Rosemary Brown Park.Fun on the swings at Rosemary Brown Park

After hearing a CBC interview last week proclaiming the long-term dangers of Nature Deficit Disorder, I panicked, packed up a picnic lunch and forced the family to traipse around Pacific Spirit National Park so we could be one with nature.  The highlight of the visit for my daughters was the concrete reservoir which made me realize we needed some remedial nature classes.  So I’m reigning in my ambitions and starting with a local park within hailing distance of our apartment complex.

Looking for the perfect park in Kits?  There’s an App for that.

Kitsilano is blessed with beautiful parks. So the issue is not finding a lovely spot to hang out, rather finding a park with all the amenities we want.  So I was delighted when I stumbled upon the Vancouver Parks app to help me choose where to take the girls to play. Read more ›

Kitsilano Pool Opens for Summer Saturday, May 18

kitsilanopool

Whether or not the forecast cooperates, Kitsilano Pool opens this weekend on Saturday, May 18. After months of gulls doing laps in goopy green waters, the beachfront beauty is back to top summer form. So perhaps it’s time to look at season pass rates and trade in rain boots for flip flops.

“Kits Pool” is the longest pool in Canada. It’s the only salt-water pool in Vancouver. For those who are visiting Kits, it’s located along the beach at Cornwall and Vine. There’s a cafe and a waterslide. Thanks to the pristine waters and jumbo-sized tanning chairs, the pool often boasts more visitors than the nearby beach. There’s also a kids’ area with a water fountain.

Running in Kitsilano: The Lululemon “No Excuses, Run!” Club

The 2013 SeaWheeze Half Marathon takes place August 10th. I’m registered.

Walking past the West 4th Lululemon happens daily in my life, so I finally put two and two together and checked out their weekly No Excuses, Run! club. The most important thing you need to know about the lulu run club? This is not your ordinary run club (and that’s a wonderful thing).

You know that feeling at 5pm when you’ve had a looong workday, and the bus is crowded, and the thought of going for a run is a just ridiculous and too much to handle? When you’re lacking energy, or drive, or desire, this is the place to be. Lisa, our fearless leader and West4th Run Ambassador, captured our attention (and hearts!) with her pleasant demeanor and energetic talk. Read more ›
