Main St. Poodle sparks a Twitter spat by suggesting an icon for Kitsilano

We covered the Main Street Poodle a few weeks back, asking: If Main Street has a fancy (or tacky) poodle icon, what should Kits have? The response from the community has been rather lackluster. The response from the Main Street Poodle is quite provocative. And borderline offensive! See the Twitter spat below:

Then it escalated:

Are we going to let that Poodle come up with our icon? One can only assume that our lack of good ideas has led to this East Van interloper’s canine aggression.

Brief history of the topic:

If you’re unfamiliar with the Main Street Poodle, it’s a 7-foot-tall porcelain dog/work of art by Gisele Amantea that sits atop a 25 foot steel pole in the city park under development at the corner of Main and 18th Ave. It cost $97,600 to get it there. Some Mount Pleasant residents dig the Main Street Poodle. Others question the poodle concept and the price tag. To justify the project and/or get it the attention the price tag should deserve, the giant poodle has a Twitter account: @MainStPoodle.

Now you’re all caught up. Kits residents have come up with a few suggestions for a visual that represents our neighbourhood identity, but we don’t have a winner yet. Here’s what we’ve come up with so far:

So here it goes again: If Main Street has a fancy (or tacky) new poodle icon, what should we have?

A bald eagle or a seal.

I don’t really understand why Main Street would have a poodle though, so maybe Kits should have something a little random too. Like a narwhal.

I find the poodle unappealing, annoying and meaningless. Was this ‘art’ choice preceded by a process to engage local residents / merchants in the community about their ideas for an artwork at that location? What does a smooth white poodle have to do with the Main Street neighbourhood I have come to know since living here? I would be inclined to support a movement to remove the poodle.
