Rodriguez Meet and Greet at Zulu Records, Oct. 11

Kits counts on Zulu Records for music events. The upcoming Meet and Greet, Thursday Oct. 11, with Sixto Rodriguez – Mexican-American singer-songwriter and subject of the award-winning documentary Searching for Sugarman – is one you really shouldn’t miss.

Rodriguez’s music did not take off in the U.S., although his poetic and socially-engaged style was compared to Dylan. But that wasn’t the end of Rodriguez’s career. The artist’s album Cold Fact found its way to apartheid-era South Africa where it became a cult hit and a soundtrack for the whites’ anti-apartheid movement. In South Africa, Cold Fact became “as big as Abbey Road or Bridge Over Troubled Water, according to this Guardian article. As the story goes, Rodriguez disappeared. Some fans claimed he committed suicide on stage. Obviously, not everyone was convinced. The 2012 film Searching for Sugarman tells the story of two South Africans searching for this folk music hero. And they found him.

Rodriguez will stop by Zulu Records on Thursday, October 11, at 7pm, for a short discussion on his extraordinary music and life. Charles Brownstein of Northern Transmissons will MC the event and moderate questions etc. Rodriguez will also be performing later that evening at Sealed with A Kiss presents show at Venue. Refreshments will be on hand.
