KitsFest returns to Kitsilano Beach August 10-12, with public yoga, palm trees and sports

Palm trees at Kits Beach? 1,000 people participating in a Kits Beach public yoga session? It’s all happening this weekend. KitsFest, the annual sports and healthy living festival by the Canada One Athletic Foundation, returns August 10-12.

The usual KitsFest tennis, volleyball and basketball tournaments are just the start of a heck of a lot of fun. Families should head for the kids’ area which will have face painting, a VFD fire truck and VPD vintage police car on-site.

Sports spectators have to chance to nosh and watch at the Baseline Bistro, where they’ll be eats from the Boathouse, Chronic Tacos and Earl’s.

KitsFest is collaborating with lululemon on the Kits Beach Yoga session that takes place after lulu’s SeaWheeze Half Marathon, at 7:37pm, August 11, led by Semperviva and YYoga instructor Mara Branscome.

Following this year’s KitsFest, the event organizers will plant six new palm trees on the beach in October, upgrade the Kitsilano Showboat, and repave the Kits Beach tennis courts.

For those who are unfamiliar with KitsFest, it all began with two-time Olympian Howard Kelsey who founded Canada One. Kelsey has played basketball on Kits Beach for 40 years. He and partner Julien Phipps, past president on the Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce, are responsible this annual event and for repaving the Kits Beach basketball courts in 2007.

KitsFest is free to attend and takes place at Kits Beach August 10-12. For more information, visit KitsFest.com. We’ll post more on lululemon’s public yoga August 11, later this week.
